Confessions of an Accidental Consultant
Nowhere in my childhood dreams or teenage ambitions did “consulting” show up. Pilot? Sure. Doctor? Maybe. Consultant? Not once. And yet, here I am, a decade deep into a field I stumbled into sideways, wondering how this became my life.
My story starts away from spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. I came from the School of Finance & Applied Economics; lots of econometrics, derivatives and stochastic modeling. Then life threw a curveball. I landed at Strathmore Business School working side by side with SME owners fighting real battles. Six years flew by. I laughed with them, problem-solved, while quietly absorbing immense lessons. Next stop: Ongoza, an ESO. I walked away with a deeper appreciation for the fulfilling but lonely chaos of entrepreneurship, with an itch to do more than observe. Quoting King T-challa “Wakanda could no longer stay in the shadows!”
Enter Intellecap. I showed up with one goal: create impact that goes beyond desks, PowerPoints, and Teams calls. I’ve supported over 200 clean-cooking enterprises across 21 countries. I’ve translated the wild, fast-moving world of carbon markets to bankers into something they could fund. I’ve worked alongside the World Bank and social enterprises helping create jobs in Kenya. Through client calls that ran long and acronyms that took weeks to memorize; I’ve had genuine fun and while at it, made friendships.
Consultants always struggle explaining what we do on a day to day basis. It will occasionally make you question your sanity at 11 p.m. while reformatting a deck for the fifth time. You’ll learn that “final version” is more of a suggestion, and that the best insights show up minutes after you’ve sent the proposal.
For me, it’s all about impact! It’s quiet and deeply satisfying. It might not sound sexy, but it’s a smallholder farmer finally getting market access after a value chain gets restructured, a policymaker rethinking SME funding, a young analyst on my team becoming a confident & competent professional. If you’re the kind of person who wants your work to touch live, consulting will humble and stretch you, and honestly – it’s worth every chaotic, coffee-fueled minute.
