Developing operational risk management systems for a Nigerian Microfinance Bank

SUSU Microfinance Bank is one of the first 8 microfinance banks licensed by Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Its target customer base includes micro and small enterprises, entrepreneurs and employees in private institutions. Following the financial crisis in the Nigerian microfinance sector, SUSU's management wanted to develop a sound operational risk management framework to minimize the risk of loss resulting from inadequate control on people, processes and systems.

Intellecap's Approach

Intellecap evaluated risk profile and level of controls for SUSU's lending and field operations. Intellecap developed new controls and implemented them across the organization. Intellecap identified key risk indicators (KRIs) to be used by the management to monitor the company's risk profile. Intellecap developed operational risk governance framework, designed risk management process and modified the internal audit function to better address operational risks through risk based internal audit.

SUSU has led the way in Nigerian microfinance sector by being among the first to implement a robust operational risk management framework. SUSU has also achieved improved member attendance levels and on-time completion of loan collections.

"This is to express our satisfaction with the quality of work carried out by Intellecap team in respect of the operational risk management project. In particular, the team displayed a high level of professionalism and succeeded in delivering value to us."
