Practitioners workshop to promote social enterprises in North Eastern states of India

Date:
July 27, 2012 (ended)

GIZ, IIE host a Practitioners' Workshop to Promote Social Enterprises in the North East Region.

Workshop organized in partnership with E&Y and Intellecap provided capacity building inputs, strategic advice and mentoring to early-stage enterprises. A workshop on 'Promoting Sustainable and Inclusive Businesses in the North East Region' was held recently in Guwahati by the Deutsche GesellschaftfürInternationaleZusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, an enterprise owned by the German Federal Government, and Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati.

Held on July 27, the workshop was part of a joint initiative of GIZ under the framework of bilateral technical cooperation funded by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, and Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) to support small and growing businesses (sustainable and inclusive enterprises) in the North East region of India. This one-day workshop was supported by technical expertise from Ernst and Young and Intellecap. Over 25 participants from emerging social enterprises operating across sectors like agriculture, clean energy, healthcare, education, handloom and handicrafts, attended the workshop. The interactive workshop brought together sector experts, investors and leading industry practitioners, who provided focused capacity building inputs, strategic advice and mentoring to the participants. The participants shared learnings, discussed challenges and opportunities for social enterprise activity in the North East region and strategies to improve their enterprise business model. Ms. Stefanie Bauer, Technical Advisor for Private Sector Development at GIZ highlighted the strategic relevance of this initiative and said, "More businesses want to create social and environmental impact in their communities and in underserved or low income markets. Together with our partners, we want to identify those innovators and create a supporting environment for their growth to magnify their impact. We believe that the North East being one of the underserved regions has a lot of potential to get attention from different players in the social impact space, including investors."

As part of its commitment towards supporting Sustainable Economic Development, Energy and Environment in India, GIZ has commissioned two landscape studies. One focuses on social enterprise activities in the North East Region authored by Intellecap; the second is a market landscape study of the overall Indian Social Enterprise Ecosystem authored by Ernst and Young.
Both reports aim to build an understanding of the challenges and potential opportunities for social enterprise activity in the region and in India. The findings of both studies are feeding into shaping the outlines of a new initiative of Indo-German cooperation implemented by GIZ and Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI). Both reports are due to be published in August 2012.
